Mr Ma succeeds in his appeal and his conviction is quashed. It emerges that the solicitors' clerk who originally advised him to plead guilty (a plea which he successfully withdrew) has convictions for rape, burglary and blackmail, amongst other things.

Following the second trial, Mr Chan's conviction for murder is again quashed, this time because, although he admitted the killing, Judge Anthea Pang Po Kam failed to direct the jury on the partial defence of provocation and the alternative verdict of manslaughter. A retrial is ordered.

Mr Chan's 2015 conviction is quashed due to a jury misdirection by Deputy High Court Judge Michael Stuart-Moore (who was a Court of Appeal Vice President until retirement in 2009), and a retrial is ordered.
