Webb-site.com is getting interactive, with the launch of an opinion polling system. We start with two polls, on the MPF and, for fun, on the Bigger Picture. Tell us what you think!

Your opinion counts
5 March 2007

We get many e-mails from readers every week, but after over 8 years of telling you what we think, and only occasionally launching campaigns to gather your views, we have decided that Webb-site.com should become much more interactive. So during the Chinese New Year break, your editor relaxed with some VBscript coding and produced a customised, database-driven and web-managed polling system for the site. Now, within a few minutes, we can launch an opinion poll on any issue we want.

If you are on our mailing list, then at the top of today's newsletter you will have received a 4-digit PIN. If you want, you can change your PIN to something more memorable. This, together with the corresponding e-mail address, will allow you to vote on our polling system. To join our list, or to receive a PIN reminder, just click here. We will not publish your e-mail address or individual votes, just the aggregate results. You will be able to retrieve any previous votes you have cast, and if the poll has not closed, then you can change or remove your vote.

The PIN system is not intended to be bullet-proof, but we think it will make for more reliable polling. It ensures that your e-mail address was valid when we sent the PIN, and you can only vote once, unless you go to the trouble of multiple e-mail addresses. We consider that to be a higher barrier to multiple voting than the common system of cookies and/or IP numbers, which allows you to vote multiple times from different PCs or browsers. Cookies would also make it difficult for two people to vote from the same PC.

We will kick off by testing the system with 2 Polls. The first relates to our recent articles on the MPF system. The second, which might run for quite a long time, relates to the bigger picture - are we, as a civilisation, alone in the Universe, and if not, then when will we, or they, know for sure?

We'll be adding more Polls after we check that the system is working well. If you have a policy area, preferably affecting Hong Kong directly or indirectly, and would like us to run an opinion poll on it, then contact us and we will try to help. Now without further ado, go and vote!
